Project Description

Christmas Paper Craft

Inspired by my childhood love of paper, I decided to create a wintry laser cut diorama of a bustling connected world for Christmas 2013. A photo of the diorama was printed as a Christmas Card and sent out to roughly 1200 recipients.

Process

Starting with a digital file, the artwork was built in 6 layers designed to fit inside a shadowbox frame. Using a laser cutter, each panel was cut out of mat board and layered using foam board offsets to give it depth. In the studio, I played around with different lighting techniques including back lighting, LED strands in between each layer, and studio lights. The artwork takes on a completely different feel depending on the type of lighting, making for a very fun experiment.
